KOTA KINABALU: The results of the 2025 Singapore General Election, which saw the People’s Action Party (PAP) secure a significant mandate, offer valuable lessons for Sabah.
Former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said that the people of Singapore continued to support the PAP, winning 87 out of 97 seats, despite facing cost of living issues.
“This sends a clear message – in uncertain times, voters tend to favour stability and experienced leadership backed by a proven party,’ he said in his latest Facebook post.
Salleh, who is also the Usukan assemblyman, acknowledged that while Sabah and Singapore differ in culture, geography, and political systems, there is a crucial similarity: voters are becoming increasingly discerning and rational in their choices.
He emphasised that voters assess leaders based on their commitment and dedication, as well as the ability of the party they represent to provide clear direction and deliver results.
“It is no longer just about personalities — the public evaluates the unity between leadership and the strength of the political organisation behind it.
“Personal politics and empty promises without action are becoming less relevant. What the public is assessing is the capability of a team — a combination of leaders and parties to address real issues such as job opportunities, basic facilities, and sustainable development,’ he remarked.
According to Salleh, the most evident lesson from Singapore’s election results is that the public places trust in a stable, competent, and reliable coalition — not merely through words, but through proven actions.
“The future of Sabah’s politics hinges on our ability to build that trust through actions, not just promises,’ he added.
