Sabah should never be caught up in the rivalry of major powers – Shafie Apdal

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah should never get entangled in the rivalry between major powers, said Parti Warisan Sabah President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

He said that because the developments in Balabac are occurring so close to Sabah, they should be taken seriously.

However, Sabahans shouldn’t be alarmed because Malaysia has consistently pursued an independent and non-aligned foreign policy.

“We should keep up our positive ties with China and the United States.

“We shouldn’t be entangled in a major power rivalry.

In a statement today, he said, “Our decisions must always be guided by Malaysia’s own interests, our sovereignty, and the security of our people.”

Shafie said the events in Balabac serve as a reminder that Sabah’s security environment is evolving.

He said Warisan supports efforts to strengthen Sabah’s security and defence.

“This should go beyond politics. The Federal Government must ensure that our Armed Forces, ESSCOM and other security agencies have the equipment, technology and resources they need, particularly in northern and eastern Sabah

“At the same time, Malaysia must continue to engage the Philippines, the United States, China and our ASEAN neighbours through diplomacy.

“We want this region to remain peaceful and stable,” he said.

Shafie said Sabah came together with others to form Malaysia in 1963.

“The security of Sabah is therefore the security of Malaysia and our sovereignty must never be compromised.

“Sabahans should not be afraid but we must remain alert and prepared.

“We must protect our borders while continuing to pursue peace through diplomacy,” he added.
