MANILA: Jose Rizal University (JRU), Philippines with the collaboration of the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Accountancy (FBEA), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) organized the International Conference on Sustainability with the theme of A Multidisciplinary Approach at the Centennial Building 5th Floor Learning Commons, recently.
According to Head of Tourism Management Program in UMS, Associate Professor Dr. Awangku Hassanal Bahar Pengiran Bagul, the conference’s objective is to provide academic discourse on sustainability issues in this region that resonates with current global concerns.
“This year, the conference is focusing on the recovery of many countries from the pandemic era and how sustainability could help build resilience to future global health crises.
“There are more than 160 active participants on-site and 187 participants online using the Zoom platform from three countries, namely Malaysia, Philippines, and Vietnam.
“The conference features seven invited speakers from the Philippines and Malaysia that talk about their research experience on how sustainability helps build resilience in multiple industries at this moment and reminded us to further understand and protect the interdependent relationships between environment, culture, and economics,” he said when contacted by media.
Meanwhile, the Conference Chair, Dr. Margie U. Alcaide, express her gratitude to all JRU and UMS officials for the support of the event.
“Especially the JRU President, Mr. Vicente K Fabella, and Vice-President Dr. Miguel Carpio with the Vice Chancellor of UMS. Prof. Datuk Dr. Kasim Hj Md. Mansor and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd. Rahimie Abd. Karim, the Dean of the FBEA UMS with others who supported the conference from the beginning up until the end.
“Bringing these great minds together to the country while ensuring smooth operations and logistics implementation proved to be strenuous, however through the diligence and assistance of the UMS delegation, and the support of the JRU community, the conference concluded most successfully,” said Alcaide who is also the Dean of the College of Education, Arts, and Sciences at JRU.
The seminar was officiated by Mr. Vincente K. Fabella.
In his officiating speech, he mentions the challenges of addressing sustainability are not just from different fields and disciplines but also the variety of ideas from different organizations and institutions.
“A university would be the best place to translate all these ideas to become solutions,” he said.
