KOTA KINABALU: The Unity Government has approved an allocation of approximately RM210.15 million to build seven rural road and bridge projects in the Tuaran Parliamentary constituency this year.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said for bridges alone, a total of 136 projects have been approved for construction and upgrading in Sabah this year.
In light of this, he urged all parties, including state representatives, to ensure that any critical and necessary requests for upgrading suspension bridges to concrete bridges are submitted to the Sabah State Economic Planning Unit before being forwarded to the Ministry of Economy for approval.
“This is to ensure that no critical bridge projects are overlooked in the ministry’s future requests to the Ministry of Economy,” he said.
Zahidi said this in a written reply to a question from Tuaran Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau, during a recent parliamentary session.
Prior to this, Madius inquired about the number of suspension bridges in the country by state and whether the ministry plans to upgrade outdated and dangerous suspension bridges, especially those used by students as main routes to schools, particularly in rural areas of Sabah.
