Political parties need to get ready to nurture future leaders – Salleh

KOTA KINABALU: “Every organisation and political party must proactively prepare future leaders,” stated former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.

He emphasised that the process of leadership transition should not occur abruptly or without thorough planning.

“Educated, mature, and capable young individuals should be afforded opportunities to assume significant responsibilities.

“They require exposure, training, and practical experience to develop confidence and leadership abilities,” he mentioned in his Facebook post.

Simultaneously, Salleh noted that the insights of senior leaders are vital in offering guidance, stability, and direction to the organisation.

“The ideal strategy for fostering robust leadership is to blend the experience of seasoned leaders with the vigour of the new generation.

“As a political veteran, I am convinced that creating opportunities for the new generation should be an ongoing and strategic endeavour.

“Young leaders ought not to merely observe; they must be granted chances to actively participate in management and decision-making processes,” he added.

He referenced the recent leadership structure in the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) as a commendable example. He remarked that Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun brings a wealth of experience in politics and state governance, while Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, Datuk Razali, and Datuk Lo Su Fui embody a younger, more professional generation of leaders.

The selection of Datuk Razali, who possesses a legal background, is also a prudent decision, he stated.

According to Salleh, merging the experience of senior leaders with the skills of the younger generation is crucial for ensuring a more stable, organised, and trustworthy leadership succession.

“A robust future hinges on how effectively we prepare the next generation to lead with discipline, accountability, and a clear vision,” he added.

“A combination of experience and the energy of the new generation is the best approach to building strong leadership.

“As a veteran in politics, I believe that creating space for the new generation should be a continuous and planned process.

“Young leaders should not just be observers; they need to be given opportunities to engage directly in management and decision-making processes,” he added.

Citing the recent leadership arrangement in the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) as a good example. He said Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun brings extensive experience in politics and state administration, while Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, Datuk Razali, and Datuk Lo Su Fui represent a younger and more professional generation of leaders.
