Rebuilding homes should not be too close together – Liew

TAWAU: Victims of the major fire who lost their homes in Kampung Sentosa, Jalan Utara Baru Hilltop, will receive assistance to rebuild their residences, but safety must be prioritized to prevent a similar tragedy from occurring again.

The President of the Sabah People’s Hope Party (PHRS), Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah, stated that they will collaborate with the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) and Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan to support the residents affected by the fire that destroyed 30 houses on Wednesday morning.

He mentioned that the village area has been approved as a village reserve, but the reconstruction of homes needs to be carried out in a more organized manner.

“This village area has been designated as a village reserve. I advise residents that when rebuilding their homes, they should not build them too close to each other.

“The Tawau Municipal Council should also monitor the construction of houses to ensure that the distance between residences is more orderly, preventing such incidents from recurring,” he said.

Liew added that having houses too close together can hinder rescue operations, especially when a fire spreads rapidly from one house to another.

Therefore, he emphasized that the reconstruction of the settlement area must consider the distance between homes and the access routes that facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles.
