KOTA KINABALU: The outstanding performance of Sabah’s athletes, who brought honor to the state at the 22nd Malaysia Games (SUKMA) and Para SUKMA 2026, has been recognised through a state government allocation of RM2.33 million in total prize incentives.
The incentive package totaling RM2,336,900 extends beyond medal-winning athletes to include coaches and team managers who played crucial roles in the success of Sabah’s contingent.
Sabah’s Minister of Youth Development, Sports Advancement, and Creative Economy, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, stated that from the total amount, RM697,400 was allocated to SUKMA medal winners, while RM1.109 million was designated for Para SUKMA medal winners.
He noted that coaches received incentives totaling RM428,500, with an additional RM102,000 distributed to team managers in recognition of their dedication.
He said this in his speech at the Prize Incentive Presentation Ceremony for Sabah’s SUKMA and Para SUKMA Contingent 2026, held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) last night.
Nizam emphasized that the provision of these incentives demonstrates the state government’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices of athletes and sports officials who strive to elevate Sabah’s achievements on the national stage.
In related developments, he noted that the state government continues its Employees Provident Fund (EPF) Contribution Program for eligible athletes, providing RM50 monthly support since 2023.
According to him, this initiative aims to ensure the welfare and future security of athletes remain prioritized, while establishing a foundation for long-term savings.
He also emphasized the importance of sustained sports development through infrastructure improvements, adoption of sports technology, and efforts to identify emerging talent.
Meanwhile, Nizam also commended the achievements of Sabah’s sports contingent, which successfully retained the overall championship title in MSSM athletics.
