KOTA KINABALU: After ten years of continuous broadcasting operations, KUPIKUPI FM has demonstrated exceptional expansion and development.
And now KUPIKUPI FM extends its terrestrial FM radio broadcasting reach into Peninsular Malaysia, becoming the first privately-owned radio station from Borneo to achieve this significant expansion.
This historic milestone brings Bornean music, culture, and stories to a wider Malaysian audience through 106.0 FM.
Via 106.0 FM, KUPIKUPI FM is now accessible across key areas in Negeri Sembilan (including Seremban) and Selangor (including Sepang, Klang, Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, and Kajang), as well as the Federal Territory of Putrajaya.
This development extends the station’s broadcasting range well beyond its primary base in East Malaysia.
This expansion represents a pivotal chapter in KUPIKUPI FM’s journey, offering a vital platform for Sabah and Sarawak communities residing in Peninsular Malaysia to maintain their connection with home.
Simultaneously, it creates an invaluable opportunity for West Malaysian audiences to discover and appreciate the music, culture, heritage, and compelling stories of Borneo more intimately.
Lester Calvin Miol, Chief Executive Officer of OOGA X Sdn Bhd, described this initiative as a momentous milestone for both the company and Borneo’s broadcasting industry.
“This represents a historic moment for us. We want our friends from Sabah and Sarawak who are residing in Peninsular Malaysia to have a radio station they can tune into whenever they miss their homeland.
“At the same time, we aim to provide our brothers and sisters in West Malaysia with an opportunity to understand Borneo more intimately.
“We are not here to compete or dominate anyone. We are here to participate, share our culture, music, and stories, and contribute to Malaysia’s broadcasting landscape, which is enriched by diversity. We hope this marks the beginning of something meaningful, not only for the Borneo community in Peninsular Malaysia, but also for everyone to enjoy,” he stated.
Launched in January 2016, KUPIKUPI FM SABAH was established as a community radio station dedicated to serving the Sabah community, promoting local talent, and providing a platform for local voices.
Operating on the 96.3 FM frequency, this station covers several areas in Sabah, including Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Papar, Beaufort, Kuala Penyu, Tuaran, Kota Belud, and nearby locations.
Beyond broadcasting, community service represents one of the station’s core operational priorities.
Throughout its operations, KUPIKUPI FM has implemented more than 30 corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in Sabah, with the majority focusing on efforts to restore water supply for rural communities.
Through the Community Work Operation initiative in collaboration with strategic partners, the station has contributed to improving access to water supply and assisting communities in need.
KUPIKUPI FM has further expanded its operations into large-scale entertainment by organizing five major concerts and a festival featuring international and local artists.
These events have also created opportunities for local artists to share the stage with renowned performers, including Repvblik, D’Masiv, and Kotak from Indonesia.
The station’s development continued with the launch of KUPIKUPI FM SARAWAK on June 9, 2023. Broadcasting on the 92.5 FM frequency in Kuching, this station brings together young talent from Sarawak through music, storytelling, and community-based programming, with the objective of fostering unity among the state’s diverse ethnic and religious communities.
The group subsequently expanded its operations into digital journalism through INFO X, Sabah’s first online news portal that specializes in news specifically about Sabah.
This platform focuses on delivering news that is fast, relevant, and connected to real community life, especially for people in Sabah.
All these platforms are part of OOGA X Sdn Bhd’s integrated media business, which includes online services, offline services, field activities, and radio broadcasting.
According to Lester Miol, the company’s abilities go beyond just radio broadcasting. OOGA X also positions itself as a strong strategic partner for businesses wanting to enter or strengthen their presence in Sabah and Sarawak.
“We want potential customers to see us as a connector and bridge to the Borneo market. Our role goes beyond radio shows. We also have skills in event management, field promotions, marketing activation, and community engagement.
“We aim to provide complete solutions for businesses that want to reach more people, build brand awareness, and connect with users in Sabah and Sarawak. We understand local communities and believe that meaningful engagement is the key to building lasting relationships,” he said.
With expansion into Peninsular Malaysia, KUPIKUPI FM wants to strengthen connections between East Malaysia and West Malaysia. It also aims to give wider exposure to creative talent, cultural diversity, and stories from Borneo communities.
From its start as a community radio station in Sabah, growing into Sarawak, and now reaching Peninsular Malaysia, KUPIKUPI FM’s journey shows the organization’s desire to keep growing while staying true to its roots and the communities that support it.
This step opens a new chapter for KUPIKUPI FM and creates bigger opportunities for voices, music, and stories from Borneo to reach a wider Malaysian audience.
For KUPIKUPI FM, this journey is not just about expanding the radio broadcast area.
Rather, it’s about bringing Borneo closer to all of Malaysia, through every story, every song, and every connection that’s formed.
