PENAMPANG: Kaamatan is more than just a festival or yearly event—it embodies the spirit and identity of the Kadazandusun and Murut (KDM) communities.

Benjamin Malakun, General Manager of ITCC Penampang, emphasized that Kaamatan is a heritage passed down from KDM ancestors, serving as a reminder of where we come from, the challenges faced by past generations, and the enduring values that have shaped community life for centuries.

He noted that this year’s theme, “Kaamatan: Harvesting Unity, Celebrating Harmony”—or in Kadazan, “Kaamatan: Mongomot Pisompuuvan, Mamalamai Piunungan”—captures the essence of the celebration, reinforcing lessons in gratitude, unity, and mutual respect.

“These are principles we must continue to live by if Sabah is to move forward while maintaining social cohesion,” he said during the closing ceremony of the ITCC Penampang 2026 Kaamatan Festival at the ITCC Central Atrium, here today.

Benjamin, who also chairs the festival’s organizing committee, shared his pride as a native of Penampang in witnessing the strong sense of kinship and solidarity that continues to thrive within the KDM communit

“Let us preserve our cultural identity, deepen unity, and work toward a brighter future for generations to come,” he added.

He extended heartfelt thanks to all organizing teams, particularly Tinan Popisamo KDCA Uvang Penampang and Putatan, participants, and everyone who contributed wholeheartedly to the success of the festivities across Hamin Penampang, KDCA, and ITCC Shopping Mall.

The celebration drew both local residents and international guests from countries such as the United States and Australia, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

Among those present were Datuk Seri Panglima Clarence B. Malakun, J.P., Executive Chairman of ITCC-Penampang and Chairman of Tinan Popisamo KDCA Uvang Penampang; Datin Seri Panglima Sylvia Malakun, Managing Director of ITCC Penampang; Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Ceasar Mandela Malakun; Datin Kimmy Tan; Datuk James Ligunjang & Datin; Datuk John Ambrose; Datuk Michael S. Malanjun; and Datuk Edmund Doudilim.

Throughout the month-long celebration beginning May 6, a wide range of events took place, including the Unduk Ngadau Dazanak Competition, RTM’s 80th Anniversary Concert, Sodop Unduk Ngadau, the ITCC Singing Competition, piboian migagung and sumazau performances, a blood donation drive, Gundohing Tavatang Pogun Sabah, Murut magunatip dance, Penampang sumazau, Papar Sazau, and other cultural activities.

Benjamin stressed that no successful event is the work of one person alone, but rather the outcome of collective effort and shared purpose.

On behalf of ITCC Shopping Mall management, he expressed deep appreciation to all attendees for joining in a festival that holds profound significance for the KDM people and all Sabahans.
