A 9.6-foot crocodile shot dead in Tawau

KOTA KINABALU: A crocodile measuring 9.6 feet was shot dead after it was believed to have frequently appeared and posed a threat to the safety of workers at a farm on Jalan Semporna in Tawau on Saturday.

The aggressive reptile was thought to be roaming near the workers’ area, raising concerns about their safety.

According to sources, the Tawau Wildlife Department (JHL) received complaints from the farm regarding the presence of the crocodile before a team was dispatched to the site for monitoring and capturing operations.

“As a result of the actions taken, the JHL team successfully located and neutralized the crocodile to prevent any unwanted incidents from occurring to the workers in the farm area,” he said.

He mentioned that the farm’s location, which is close to a river and wet areas, is believed to be the habitat of the reptile.

In this regard, the public, especially farm workers, are advised to exercise greater caution when near riverbanks, ditches, or wet locations as there may still be other crocodiles in the area.

“The community is also urged to promptly report to the relevant authorities if they spot any crocodiles to avoid the risk of attacks on humans,” he added.
