Sabah’s Political Awakening: Charting the Next Five Years

By Majangkim Office

KOTA KINABALU: Several days after the conclusion of the Sabah State Election, questions have emerged about the future of Malaysia.

What trajectory will Sabah take in the next five years? What lies ahead for us as a nation?

These are pressing questions, and while no one can predict the future with certainty, the foundations laid in the past allow us to make informed reflections.

The Past: Lessons and Struggles

Sabah’s journey since joining Malaysia has been marked by slow development.

For decades, progress was hindered by the emergency ordinance, which lasted 42 years, and by politicians more concerned with self-interest than public welfare.

Rights of Sabahans were eroded, and governance was dominated by entrenched elites. The result was a state left behind, despite its rich resources and potential.

The Present: A Spirit of Renewal

The recent state election signaled a political awakening — a revival of Sabahan spirit and a step toward self-determination.

Today, Sabah enjoys a stronger and more balanced opposition, which is crucial for good governance. More eyes are now watching state policies and budgets, ensuring accountability and transparency.

This renewed political landscape reflects the people’s desire for change and their determination to shape their own destiny.

The Ripple Effect: National Implications

The poor performance of Malayan-based parties in Sabah has created ripple effects across Malaysia.

Of Sabah’s 25 parliamentary seats, 11 are currently held by Malayan-based parties, and these may soon be contested by local parties.

This shift could alter the balance of power nationally, giving Sabah greater leverage in federal politics.

Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional shows signs of resurgence, fueled by declining public support for Pakatan Harapan after three years in power.

Issues such as continued corruption, repeated “discharge not amounting to acquittal” (DNAA) cases, and the Prime Minister’s handling of Sabah’s 40% revenue rights have deepened public frustration.

The upcoming Harvest Festival will be a litmus test: will the Prime Minister continue his dismissive tone toward Sabahans, or adopt a more respectful approach?

Federal Politics and Sabah’s Future

UMNO’s stance on Najib’s appeal and the house arrest controversy has sparked further conspiracy theories, raising concerns about the willingness of political actors to bend the law.

Some speculate that UMNO may withdraw support from the unity government, potentially leading to another change in leadership. Whatever happens at the federal level will inevitably affect Sabah.

The Road Ahead

For Sabah, the path forward is clear: secure more parliamentary seats in the next general election.

Like Sarawak, Sabah must strengthen its position to demand its rights, restore its dignity, and help steer Malaysia away from decline.

As a constitutional monarchy, Malaysia is bound by the Federal Constitution, which must remain supreme. Sabah now stands at a crossroads — the choices made today will determine whether it becomes a driver of renewal or remains a victim of neglect.

A Call to Action

This is not the time for complacency. Sabahans must rise to the occasion, unite across communities, and demand accountability from leaders. Every vote, every voice, and every act of civic participation matters.

The political awakening we have witnessed must be sustained — not just in elections, but in daily vigilance over governance.

If Sabahans stand firm, the next five years can mark the beginning of a new chapter: one where Sabah claims its rightful place in shaping Malaysia’s future.

Season’s Greeting

As we stand at this crossroads, let us also embrace the spirit of renewal that comes with the festive season.

May the unity and determination of Sabahans shine as brightly as the lights of Christmas, and may the New Year bring strength, dignity, and progress to our beloved state and nation.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
