Sabahans should not allow extreme ideas to destroy the unity – Salleh

KOTA KINABALU: The harmonious existence experienced by the people of diverse backgrounds in Sabah is a valuable asset that needs to be protected at all times, stated former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.

As such, he stressed that the people should not allow extreme ideas to destroy the unity that had been built over the years.

“Malaysia will be a stronger and better country if we choose inclusive, moderate, and forward-looking politics—where everyone feels respected and heard,” he said in a recent Facebook post.

Salleh, who is the Usukan assemblyman, said extremism doesn’t happen suddenly, and instead it grows when people feel left out and treated unfairly and when moderate voices are ignored.

“In a diverse society, if any group feels they are being pushed aside—economically, culturally, or politically—there’s a risk that harmful and divisive ideas will grow.

“We’ve seen what happens in other countries when extremism takes over:

“Sri Lanka suffered a long conflict due to ethnic-based politics,” he added.

He said Myanmar saw minority groups being oppressed in the name of religion, while India is now facing growing tensions caused by rising extremism.

“In times like this, politics should bring people together, not push them apart. We need leaders who unite—not leaders who create fear and anger.

“Mature politics means focusing on what matters—jobs, education, healthcare, and a better life for all. It is not about one group trying to dominate another,” he added.
