SESB kicks off the construction of the largest BESS in Southeast Asia

KOTA KINABALU: In a continuous effort to boost the generation capacity of the Sabah Grid, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) is set to develop a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 100 Megawatts (MW) and an energy storage of 400 MWj in Lahad Datu.

SESB has received a Letter of Notification (LoN) from the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) for the 100MW/400MWj BESS project, which will be located on the East Coast of Sabah.

The trust placed in SESB by ECoS and the Sabah State Government to carry out this BESS project will be taken on with full responsibility and effort to ensure it is completed on schedule.

With a maximum energy storage capacity of 400MWj, this project is set to become the largest BESS system in Southeast Asia.

SESB’s CEO, Ir.Ts. Mohd Yaakob Hj. Jaafar, said that this project will enhance the reserve margin capacity of the Sabah Grid during peak times and support the increase of solar energy sources, specifically Large Scale Solar (LSS).

He said that the project is expected to kick off in September this year and is scheduled for completion by June 30, 2025.

Last week, Mohd Yaakob visited the Dam Road Main Entry Substation (PMU) in Lahad Datu to check on the upgrade of the PMU to a 275kV voltage, which will serve as the injection point for the BESS.

“This project will enhance the stability of generation capacity in the Sabah Grid, while also contributing to environmental sustainability and boosting the potential for renewable energy generation,” he added.
