Three newly completed UMS tube wells ready for use

KOTA KINABALU: The trio of recently finished tube wells, designed to address the water shortage problem on the premises of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), are now prepared for utilisation.

Deputy Minister of Higher Education Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said that six more tube wells are currently in the process of installing tanks and water filtration systems, followed by pipeline works to distribute water to student dormitories.

“I have been informed that three are already fully completed and the others are expected to be completed in the near future, so we hope this will resolve the water supply issue at UMS.

Meanwhile, six more tube wells have been drilled and are now only in the process of installing tanks and water filtration systems, followed by pipeline works to distribute water to student dormitories,” he said.

He made these remarks when he met at the Ihya Ramadan Programme with Politeknik Kota Kinabalu (PKK) residents here yesterday.

Mustapha was asked to comment on the progress of the tube well project, which began in January after UMS students complained of difficulties in carrying out their daily routines, even going without showers for days due to limited water supply from the Sabah State Water Department (JANS).

He acknowledged that the project was slightly delayed but assured that it would be completed in the near future.

The six tube wells built at UMS are funded with the RM3 million announced by the Prime Minister.

Additionally, two more additional tube wells are being built using funds from the Ministry of Higher Education, besides one that has already been completed through UMS’s own initiative, making a total of nine tube wells when fully completed.

Jan previously faced difficulties in providing sufficient water supply at the UMS campus due to the water capacity from the Telibong Water Treatment Plant (LRA) in Tuaran being below the demand rate.

However, it is understood that the situation has improved with the completion of Telibong LRA Phase Two at the end of last year, followed by the completion of pipeline connection works last month.
