KINABATANGAN: A total of 11 elephants, one of which was a calf, were successfully rescued after becoming trapped in an abandoned water pool near the Deramakot Forest Reserve in the FGV Cepat Ringgit B plantation.
The incident is believed to have occurred last week when the herd of elephants entered the pool area and was unable to exit due to the steep and slippery banks.
According to the Wildlife Department (JHL), a rescue operation was promptly initiated upon receiving reports about the incident.
“Thanks to the swift action and cooperation of all parties involved, all 11 elephants were rescued without any serious injuries reported,” the statement said on Monday.
The operation involved creating a gentler and safer exit route to allow all the elephants to leave the pool area.
JHL also recommended that the abandoned water pool be closed off or fitted with appropriate safety barriers to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
