TAMPARULI: A total of 29 participants from around this district have benefited from the Basic News Writing and Public Speaking Workshop organised by Johan Jahid, Special Officer to the Sabah Minister of Rural Development.
Most of the attendees were young individuals who had recently completed their SPM and STPM examinations. The workshop introduced them to the fundamentals of responsible news and article writing, with a focus on knowledge sharing, information dissemination and addressing current issues.
According to Johan, the initiative aimed to equip young people with valuable skills as they prepare to pursue further education, especially in producing high-quality written work.
“Although our main target was youth, the workshop also attracted the participation of local women who often write articles for village activities and church bulletins.
“Participants were also exposed to public speaking techniques and responsible digital content creation, including how to identify engaging topics and promote the beauty and uniqueness of Sabah from various perspectives such as tourism, culture, and cuisine,” he said.
The workshop was held at MJ Corner here on Monday.
Presiden Sabah Journalist Association (SJA), Mariah Doksil served as the workshop speaker. She repeatedly emphasised the importance of self-monitoring when uploading content to various media platforms to ensure their writing adheres to ethical standards.
The Basic News Writing and Public Speaking Workshop was officiated by State Assembly Member Datuk Jahid Jahim.
In his brief speech, Jahid urged participants to make full use of the knowledge shared by the speaker and hoped it would be applied within their communities to produce impactful articles and digital content.
Jahid also encouraged young people to continuously seek out other soft skills that could be beneficial in both further education and future employment.
