VATICAN CITY: Following the announcement of Pope Francis’ death, individuals convened in St. Peter’s Square this evening to pay their respects, laying flowers and lighting candles at various monuments throughout the area.

Local authorities closed the piazza at 11 p.m. (5 p.m. ET), yet many remained, some capturing photographs while others engaged in quiet prayer. A small group even sang a hymn in remembrance.

Francisco Obregón, who traveled from Argentina for a family vacation, learned of the pope’s death while en route to Italy.

“We are filled with sorrow,” Obregón shared with CNN. “He was the leader of our church, and as Argentinians, we feel this loss deeply.”

While Obregón acknowledged that he did not agree with all of Francis’ decisions during his papacy, he and his family expressed their sadness and commitment to mourning the pope.

“As Catholics, we believe that death marks the beginning of a new journey with God,” he remarked, wishing the pope a peaceful transition to the afterlife.

Jimena Figeroa from Mexico conveyed her sadness but also expressed admiration for Francis’ achievements.

When asked about her hopes for the next pope, Figeroa stated, “I hope for someone who is not conservative but progressive, to carry on the legacy of Pope Francis and advance the church.”
