KOTA KINABALU: David Chan, Chairman of the National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (YPNM) Sabah Branch, has expressed strong support for the Sabah State Cabinet’s recent decision to allocate RM50.9 million in subsidies aimed at alleviating the financial impact of the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) on electricity tariffs, effective from January 1 to June 30, 2025.
This significant initiative, revealed by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Noor, is designed to provide essential support to the B40 low-income demographic and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
With this subsidy, households consuming electricity below RM677 (around 1,500 kWh) and SMEs will continue to enjoy favorable rates, thereby easing their financial burdens.
“It is important to highlight that consumers in Sabah benefit from lower electricity tariffs compared to those in Peninsular Malaysia,” he said in a statement today.
Looking ahead, YPNM is hopeful that the Madani Government will tackle critical issues related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Addressing these concerns, especially in the oil and gas sectors, will greatly enhance Sabah’s economic position and autonomy.
Furthermore, YPNM welcomes the appointment of Tun Musa Aman as the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah. This decision, made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, reflects a commitment to upholding the constitutional process.
“We call on all stakeholders to refrain from politicizing this appointment and instead concentrate on promoting unity and progress for the state of Sabah,” he added.
