PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has requested a comprehensive report regarding the ongoing water supply problem at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).
FMT reported that despite the approval of RM3 million last year to address the issue, the problem persists.
Anwar, who also serves as the finance minister, discovered through social media that higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir was confronted by students at UMS yesterday, expressing their dissatisfaction with the inadequate water supply.
During the finance ministry’s monthly assembly, Anwar expressed his uncertainty as to why the issue remains unresolved.
He recalled approving the allocation during his visit to UMS last year and speculated that the project may require more time.
Anwar emphasized that he does not intend to assign blame but rather seeks a detailed report on the situation.
Anwar has instructed Treasury secretary-general Johan Mahmood Merican to liaise with the higher education ministry’s secretary-general for updates and to ascertain the actions taken by UMS to address the matter.
During a visit to Kota Kinabalu on May 31 last year, Anwar had announced that the federal government would allocate RM3 million to the state government to resolve UMS’s water problems.
Additionally, Zambry pledged an extra RM2 million for the same purpose during his recent trip to the Sabah capital.
