KENINGAU: The journalism profession has proven instrumental in ensuring information reaches its intended audiences while serving as a crucial platform for disseminating essential knowledge to the public.
Deputy Chairman of Sawit Kinabalu Group and Borneo Samudera Sdn Bhd, Dato’ Victor Peter Paut emphasised that journalists and media professionals play an indispensable role in society.
“They don’t merely deliver unknown information; they powerfully communicate stories about infrastructure development, newly constructed roads, erected buildings, and economic achievements accomplished by governments, organizations, and other entities.
“Through media channels, development must be evaluated by measuring how effectively citizens’ voices are heard, their concerns are understood, and their aspirations receive proper attention.
“This is where journalists demonstrate their tremendous significance. These professionals are frequently regarded as the government’s eyes and ears, while simultaneously functioning as the critical bridge connecting citizens’ voices with decision-makers.
“When citizens face hardships, journalists bring these matters into public consciousness.
“When communities offer suggestions, express hopes, and articulate needs, journalists provide the platform enabling those voices to be heard. When policies or programs are implemented, journalists help communities comprehend, evaluate, and monitor their progress.
“This represents authentic journalism’s true value. Governments require accurate information to grasp genuine ground-level conditions, while citizens need accessible channels to express their perspectives and requirements,” Victor stated.
Victor said this in his remarks in conjuction with the 2026 Sabah Interior Media Appreciation Night, here on Saturday.
At the event, he extended his appreciation to all media professionals in Keningau and surrounding areas, offering commendation and congratulations for their commitment, dedication, and contributions to the community.
“May the spirit of professionalism, integrity, and courage among you continue to inspire the next generation of journalists,” he said.
According to Victor, in today’s rapidly evolving world, news spreads within seconds, yet its impact resonates for years.
“Therefore, accuracy must supersede speed, facts must precede assumptions, and integrity must consistently outweigh personal interests.
In his view, given today’s rapidly evolving global landscape, news can disseminate within seconds, yet its impact can be felt for years to come.
“This is precisely why accuracy must take precedence over speed, facts must come before assumptions, and integrity must always supersede personal interests.
Media freedom and professional responsibility must advance together,” he further stated.
He also expressed the belief that every criticism grounded in factual evidence is not an impediment to progress.
Rather, it serves as guidance for addressing weaknesses and enhancing the quality of services delivered to the public.
“Journalists who courageously communicate the truth help society see with greater clarity.
Journalists with integrity help society make more prudent judgments, and journalists who are accountable help build a better future.
Therefore, as someone who also bears responsibility in the corporate sector and community engagement, I believe that every organization, every leader, and every individual requires honest feedback to continue advancing.
“We cannot resolve a problem if we refuse to acknowledge it.
“We cannot build trust if we close channels of communication, and we cannot achieve meaningful progress if the voice of society is disregarded,” he added.
