PITAS: The Sabah government is urged to consistently place the welfare and interests of local residents at the forefront before considering any large-scale land applications from corporate entities in the Pitas district.
President of the Rungus Pitas Sabah Association (PISAAN), Richard Mazagi, emphasised that although his organization acknowledges efforts to drive the state’s economic development through the forestry industry, the rights and land applications from affected village residents or those within the Sabah Forestry Development Authority (SAFODA) area must be given fair priority.
He commented on reports concerning an application submitted by Akasia Forest Industry Sdn Bhd (AFI SB) for 5,000 hectares intended for expanding eucalyptus species cultivation in the Pitas district.
According to him, although this forestry expansion appears capable of contributing to the state’s revenue and economic gains, the welfare of grassroots citizens cannot simply be compromised.
“This step is certainly beneficial for state revenue, but also consider land applications from village residents included within the SAFODA area. Prioritize the people’s interests before considering corporate interests,” Richard stated in a statement on Friday.
Previously, an official visit by state government leadership headed by the Deputy Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Isnin Aliasnih alongside SAFODA’s General Manager, Datuk Bahrul Razha Chuprat, to the Pitas district discussed strategic planning to further expand industrial forest cultivation areas, particularly involving Eucalyptus pellita species to meet downstream industry requirements such as veneer mills and wood pellet factories in the state.
However, he reminded that most local communities in Pitas also depend on the said land for their livelihood.
