KOTA KINABALU: Parti Kerjasama Anak Negeri (ANAK NEGERI) is of the view that there is no urgent need to prolong the polemic or issue excessive statements regarding the joke involving a priest and a nun recently brought up by Sepang UMNO Division Chief, Datuk Noorazli Said.
Based on my examination, the joke is not a new narrative; in fact, it has long existed and gone viral on digital platforms like Reddit for over 12 years.
Furthermore, there are plenty of similar jokes about priests and nuns on the internet.
Although in terms of appropriateness it may be less than ideal to bring this up on an open political stage, it should not be dragged out or regarded as malicious intent or an insult against any party.
The attempt to link this with a quote from Psalm 129 is also inaccurate and has no direct connection to real essence of the joke. In reality, the joke may simply be a satirical remark about a missed political opportunity due to a lack of astuteness in reading the actual situation.
We are not sure why the Sepang UMNO Chief chose a religiously-themed joke, but it is clearly a form of cynical entertainment favored by certain groups of netizens, and it was even popularized by people in Western countries themselves.
Therefore, we as Christians in this country do not need to feel overly offended or react hastily.
Our priority as Malaysians, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak at this time, must remain fully focused on substantive issues aimed at solving the people’s problems, socioeconomic development, and strengthening the stability and harmony of our multi-ethnic and multi-religious society.
Let us put an end to this time-wasting polemic and refocus on the agenda of serving the people and the nation.
