GENEVA: The World Meteorological Organization has warned that there is an 80% likelihood of El Niño developing between June and August, raising concerns about more frequent and intense weather extremes worldwide.
The UN agency stated that rising sea temperatures in the tropical Pacific are driving the formation of El Niño conditions, which are expected to affect global temperature and precipitation patterns.
According to forecasts from the WMO’s international monitoring network, there is a strong shift underway, with the highest probability of full El Niño conditions occurring during the June-to-August period.
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern characterized by warmer-than-average ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific.
It disrupts typical atmospheric circulation, altering wind, pressure systems, and rainfall across the globe.
The phenomenon typically emerges every two to seven years and persists for nine to twelve months. Climate conditions regularly cycle between El Niño, its cooler counterpart La Niña, and neutral phases in between.
