TAMBUNAN: The Kaamatan Festival is more than just a traditional event for the Kadazandusun, Murut, and Rungus (KDMR) people—it stands as an expression of thankfulness for the harvest, a testament to communal unity, and a way to honor the cultural legacy passed down through generations.
Dato’ Victor P. Paut, head of the Sabah People’s Gagasan Party (PGRS) in Tambunan, said this year’s festival theme, “Kaamatan: Harvesting Unity, Celebrating Harmony,” resonates deeply with efforts to reinforce social cohesion and safeguard cultural traditions that contribute to a peaceful and forward-moving society.
“In a world that is rapidly modernizing and full of challenges, we must ensure our cultural identity isn’t swept away by progress,” he remarked during the opening of the PGRS Tambunan Kaamatan Festival 2026 at Pinsompuruan Hall on Saturday.
He emphasized the importance of educating youth about their history, customs, and heritage so these values remain vibrant and respected in years to come.
Victor expressed pride in how the Tambunan community continues to uphold key cultural practices—such as the sumazau dance, sugandoi singing contests, traditional clothing, native cuisine, and age-old games—that serve as shared sources of pride.
Victor, who is also Deputy Chairman of Sawit Kinabalu, highlighted that the successful staging of this year’s Kaamatan celebration would not have been possible without broad collaboration and support from various groups.
He offered sincere thanks to all contributors, sponsors, and individuals who played a part in making the event a success.
“Some gave financial support, others provided equipment, prizes, food, and drinks, while many volunteered their time and energy,” he noted.
