KOTA KINABALU: Over 150 participants from different districts in Sabah, including Labuan, Keningau, Beaufort, Sipitang, Tawau, Sandakan, Kinabatangan, and Lahad Datu, have signed up for the Sepanggar Fishing Festival 2026.
The event is set for May 17 at the ODEC Jetty, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), and aims to host up to 350 participants.
This festival features a total prize pool of RM16,100, which includes a grand prize of RM10,000 along with lucky draw prizes like motorcycles and electrical appliances.
The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Industry of Sabah, Datuk Jamawi Jaafar, is anticipated to officiate the fishing festival.
“This event gives anglers a chance to fish in the waters of Sepanggar, a location that is seldom used for such events.
“We urge more participants to take part in this program as part of the registration fees will be donated to the Dapur Siswa Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS),” stated Jamawi.
He made these comments during a courtesy visit from the Organizing Committee of the Sepanggar Fishing Festival UMS 2026, today.
“A portion of the registration fees will be directed to the Dapur Siswa UMS as a welfare initiative,” Jamawi further mentioned.
The closing ceremony will be officiated by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak), Datuk Mustapha Sakmud.
