KOTA KINABALU: Renowned broadcast journalist Karam Singh Walia died at his home in Klang at 3:30 AM today. He was 67 years old.
As reported by FMT, his younger brother, Jasbant Singh, who is the group managing editor of news and current affairs at Media Prima Bhd, confirmed his death, as stated by BuletinTV3.
Karam was a prominent figure in broadcast journalism, best known for his long tenure as a news anchor and investigative reporter for TV3’s Buletin Utama during the 1990s and 2000s.
Recognised as one of Malaysia’s foremost environmental journalists, Karam built a reputation for creating impactful special reports, particularly on topics related to pollution, public safety, and environmental sustainability.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil expressed his condolences to Karam’s family, noting that the late journalist made substantial contributions to the field of broadcasting.
“He infused a unique style into news delivery, crafting each report with a flair that was distinctly his own.
“May he rest in peace,” Fahmi remarked in a statement.
Fahmi also mentioned that anyone who watched BuletinTV3, especially from the 1990s to around 2014, would immediately recognise Karam’s presence – particularly for the signature “pantun” that he included at the end of each report.
Karam worked as a broadcast journalist with TV3 from 1995 until his retirement in 2014.
He was a multiple award winner at the Malaysia Press Institute Awards, receiving the “Best Environmental Television Journalist” title in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. Additionally, he was a two-time winner of the “Best TV Journalist” award at the Anugerah Seri Angkasa.
He had been battling liver and kidney disease for several years.
