KOTA KINABALU: The rebranding of Barisan Nasional (BN) should go beyond superficial changes and instead signify a genuine transformation in mindset, strategy, and political culture, according to former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.
He pointed out that the outdated notion of BN needing to contest half of the total seats is no longer applicable.
“That approach originated from a different era of political dominance.
“In today’s political landscape, success hinges on coalitions, negotiations, and strategic alliances. Strength is defined by the capacity to form stable governments, rather than merely the number of seats contested,” he stated in a post on Facebook.
Consequently, the Sabah UMNO Treasurer remarked that the recent comments by Barisan Nasional’s Secretary-General, Zambry Abdul Kadir, regarding rebranding are well-timed.
“It indicates an understanding that the political environment has evolved.
“Voters now demand clear policies, economic direction, integrity, and practical solutions. Excessive ideological positioning or confrontational politics is no longer in vogue,” he noted.
Salleh emphasised that BN’s renewal should prioritize credibility, policy clarity, and collaboration with others.
“Competing alone is not a viable strategy in the current political climate.
“Genuine rebranding involves a shift from mere symbolism to substantive action — transitioning from counting seats to achieving tangible results,” he added.
