SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Heritage Walk, co-organized with St Cecilia’s Alumni, drew a total of 102 participants, including several international visitors.
Tuan Wilson Thomas, Deputy President 1 of the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS), was present to represent Tuan Walter Kenson, the newly appointed MPS President, in support of the event.
During a briefing at the Hotel Sandakan Ballroom, Lai King Hang, Founder and Chairman of the Sandakan Heritage Trail, discussed the initiative to identify heritage trees along the trail, a concept developed by Tuan Walter Kenson.
Prior to the official commencement, participants gathered at the first heritage site, Masjid Jamik, located outside Hotel Sandakan, where several large trees were tagged with QR codes.
These codes can be scanned for additional information about the trees. Lai noted that more historic trees along the trail will be similarly marked in the future.
This project was made possible with the support of Dr. Arthur Chung and Dr. Joan T. Pereira from the Forestry Department.
Additionally, Lily Aw, President of St Cecilia’s Alumni, expressed her gratitude to her members, local schools, and other NGOs for their support of this walk, which aims to highlight the significance of physical activity while educating participants about the history of Sandakan.
