Sabah Tourism: A Gem of the Far East

By Social Activist Remy Majangkim

KOTA KINABALU: In 2023, Sabah attracted 2.6 million tourists, generating revenue between 1 and 1.9 billion USD. This figure is expected to increase significantly each year, positioning Sabah as a major tourist destination in the foreseeable future.

Sabah has a lot to offer for tourists seeking nature, culture, and food. We have even more undiscovered hidden gems nestled around the countryside. We have it all.

So what can the state government do to complement the development of our tourism industry? The State should not try reinventing the wheel of tourism products but rather accompany it in different areas.

So what can it do now, with quick mobilisation and almost immediate results? The answer is maintenance, specifically grass-cutting initiatives and trash removal in all districts in Sabah. This includes roadside grass-cutting, trash collection, and strategic trash stations along the road. (For example, Kota Kinabalu – Telupid – Sandakan – Lahad Datu – Semporna – Tawau)

Secondly, enhancing food safety awareness within the state is vital for safeguarding public health and ensuring the well-being of our communities, particularly with the influx of tourists. We are committed to taking proactive steps in this important area. Coffee shops, restaurants, and street food vendors need to be educated and audited on the importance of food safety. Food preparation and proper sanitation practices are essential at all times.

The state should also consider allocating funds for the neutering of cats and dogs. It is essential to control the population of pets and stray animals before it becomes unmanageable. This approach does not involve shooting or using darts on stray dogs. We have a great opportunity to collaborate with NGOs and animal activists to create a safe and humane approach for animals in our state.

Establish a three-year plan with results to be audited by the state. This can be accomplished with a simple decision and a significant allocation of the state budget. The commitment you are looking for within RM 50M with the gradual allocation of RM 100M is a small drop in comparison to revenue from the tourism sector alone but packed a punch.

Our goals are to maintain clean streets soothing to the eyes, ensure access to safe and high-quality food, and restore our bond with our pet animals.

The aftermath will highlight creativity in the tourism industry, fostering expansion. It will also create new job opportunities and improve public services for the population. Additionally, the initiatives reveal other areas that require attention. This will be addressed accordingly and swiftly.
