KOTA KINABALU: People from different races in this country should never take things for granted in matters of national importance, said former federal minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.
He pointed out that most of the people understand how racial tensions can seriously threaten a government’s political stability and national security.
The former Sabah Chief Minister said that the ongoing riots and violent protests in the United Kingdom serve as a wake-up call for all nations.
“We can’t take national issues lightly,” he shared in a recent Facebook post.
Salleh highlighted that this topic was brought up by the Prime Minister during his recent visit to Sabah, emphasising the need to tackle racism to prevent any potential threats.
“He has every reason to be worried about this, given our country’s diverse ethnic makeup,” he noted.
Salleh urged all relevant parties to consider whether the country’s current education system effectively promotes social integration and helps prevent racial conflicts.
“We need to turn the Prime Minister’s vision into action.
“Being proactive is key if we want to establish a solid foundation for racial harmony in our country,” said Salleh, who is also the Usukan assemblyman.
