TAWAU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Zone Six chairman Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah has appealed to the Sabah State Water Department (JANS) to consider postponing water disconnections for users in areas still experiencing ongoing supply disruptions.
He said the request was important to prevent residents struggling with a lack of clean water from facing an additional burden, particularly those with outstanding bills.
Frequent water disruptions, he said, affected residents’ daily lives and placed further financial pressure on low-income households.
“Some residents have to spend extra money on treated water, storage tanks and water pumps to meet their families’ daily needs.
“Users understand that outstanding bills must be paid. However, while water supply remains disrupted, it would be reasonable to offer them time and some flexibility,” he said in a statement.
Liew, who is also president of the Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (PHRS), said the authorities should consider residents’ actual circumstances before taking action to cut off their water supply.
He therefore called on Sabah Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam to examine the issue thoroughly.
Liew added that he planned to contact Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor to seek special consideration for delaying water disconnections until the situation stabilises.
