New Political Approach Vital for Sabah’s Plural Society – Salleh

KOTA KINABALU: The rich diversity of Sabah, encompassing various ethnicities, religions, and cultures, necessitates a political strategy that is equitable and inclusive, ensuring that all communities feel valued and engaged.

In this context, former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak emphasised that implementing a system grounded in representative meritocracy is essential for the effectiveness of this new political strategy.

“Leadership must reflect Sabah’s plural society while ensuring that those appointed are qualified, capable, and of integrity,” he said in his latest Facebook post.

Salleh, the assemblyman for Usukan, emphasised that the three primary groups—Muslim Bumiputera, non-Muslim Bumiputera, and non-Bumiputera—deserve substantial representation in government, with genuine responsibilities rather than merely symbolic positions.

“Alongside community inclusion, major political parties must also be part of the power-sharing structure, especially those with broad support across regions. Yet, merit must always guide leadership appointments.

“This reflects the essence of political accommodation—a spirit of cooperation between communities and parties to ensure stability, fairness, and unity in governance,” he added.

He stressed that for it to be successful, there needs to be a robust and genuine political commitment, rooted in mutual respect and a common vision for the future of Sabah.

“This approach is consistent with the spirit in which Sabah’s political framework was built—through mutual understanding, partnership, and a fair sharing of power among communities.

“It reflects constitutional values of balance, inclusion, and regional autonomy,” he added.

Salleh said that looking ahead, the key focus should be on a governance model that fosters inclusion, competence, and collective responsibility, ensuring that every community and region contributes significantly to shaping the future of Sabah.
