KOTA KINABALU: Sabah and Sarawak must take proactive measures to prevent themselves from being affected by the divisive issues that are prevalent in Peninsular Malaysia, according to former Sabah deputy chief minister Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau.
Tangau suggested that Sabah and Sarawak should establish a distinct identity as “Other Malaysia,” one that is characterised by reasonableness, stability, inclusivity, and a harmonious coexistence of diverse cultures.
The Tuaran MP said that this branding would attract both local and foreign investors to the Bornean states. Despite lacking in infrastructure and human resources, Tangau believes that their openness and welcoming nature will compensate for these shortcomings.
Tangau also highlighted that even before the formation of Malaysia, the people of Sabah and Sarawak have always embodied the values of compassion, respect, and trust, making them the true embodiment of a “Madani” country.
He emphasised that moderation is deeply ingrained in their culture.
Tangau expressed his hope that the chief minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, and the premier of Sarawak, Datuk Abang Johari Openg, would recognise the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the Bornean states.
In contrast, Madius strongly criticised Dr. Akmal Saleh’s exaggerated response to the controversy surrounding the “Allah” socks.
He sarcastically suggested that the Umno Youth chief should demand an apology from China regarding this issue.
In response to Akmal’s call for a nationwide boycott of KK Mart, Tangau stated that the Umno representative should instead focus on summoning China’s ambassador to Malaysia to address the matter.
Additionally, Madius emphasised the importance of acknowledging KK Mart’s prompt action in removing the controversial products from its shelves and offering apologies for the incident.
