Sabah Seeks Enhanced Maritime Security Control in Kudat Following Military Activity

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah State Government is seeking to strengthen security and surveillance measures along its maritime borders, particularly in the Kudat waters including Banggi Island and Balambangan Island, in response to recent military developments in the surrounding region.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor stated that these developments require all stakeholders to remain vigilant regarding changes in the strategic environment to ensure the nation’s security and sovereignty are continuously safeguarded.

According to him, the state government welcomes Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s emphasis on strengthening border control, including plans to acquire artificial intelligence (AI)-based radar systems and long-range cameras in Kudat by 2028.

“I have personally discussed this matter with the Prime Minister regarding the need for additional security personnel in the Kudat maritime waters, and he has responded positively.

“Security is a fundamental foundation that ensures national stability, sustains economic development, and promotes the welfare of the people.

“In light of the security and defense priorities outlined under the 2027 Budget, the Sabah State Government welcomes the Prime Minister’s presentation emphasizing the strengthening of border control,” he said.

He made these remarks while chairing the State Security Committee Meeting at Menara Kinabalu here on Thursday.

In related developments, Hajiji also requested that responsible agencies intensify monitoring of the transboundary haze phenomenon currently affecting several areas in Sabah, particularly near the Indonesian border.
