A woman accidentally pressed the pedal, causing a Proton X70 to crash into the KKIA departure hall

KOTA KINABALU: A woman in her 60s was injured when her Proton X70 SUV accidentally sped forward and crashed into the departure hall of Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) yesterday afternoon.

According to Sabah Media, the incident happened around 4:20 PM while the woman was at the airport seeing off her son, who was boarding a flight to Kuala Lumpur.

She sustained minor head injuries and was given initial medical care before being taken by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment.

Assistant Commissioner Shahrudin Mat Husain, Kota Kinabalu’s District Police Chief, confirmed the event.

He explained that it occurred on the third floor in the upper departure area and emphasized that no members of the public were hurt—only the driver suffered injuries, which were minor.

Initial findings suggest the driver likely mistook the accelerator for the brake, causing the vehicle to surge through the entrance doors and into the terminal.

Witnesses at the scene remained composed and assisted authorities as the vehicle was removed and inspections continued without disruption.

The investigation into the incident is still underway.
