KOTA KINABALU: The residents of Kampung Rampayan Menggatal are calling for the expedited execution of the drainage and river excavation project, also known as the Rampayan Flood Mitigation Project, as it is believed to be a primary cause of flash floods, along with stagnant water issues that disrupt daily life, especially during the rainy season.

A representative of the village, Gundohing Aris Ramlie, believes it is time for the government, including the Sepanggar Member of Parliament, to take decisive action to find the best solutions to this ongoing problem.

“The flooding issue in Kampung Rampayan is not new. Every time there is prolonged heavy rain, many homes in this village are inundated with water.

“We, the residents of Kampung Rampayan, have repeatedly requested and pleaded with the government to expedite the excavation work for the drainage and river in Rampayan, but so far, there has been no significant change.

“Promises have been made to improve the situation, yet nothing has changed… we hope this time the government will seriously help us and not just make empty promises or Tarang Bulan promises,” he said in a recent social media post.

Meanwhile, Aris welcomed the commitment of the Sepanggar Member of Parliament, Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, to address the flooding issues in Kampung Rampayan, which has been one of the areas severely affected by recent floods.

Mustapha, who is also the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs), was quoted as saying that efforts to tackle the flooding problem in the area are actively being carried out through the Rampayan Flood Mitigation Project, which is currently under construction.

According to Mustapha, funding for Phase 2 of the Rampayan Flood Mitigation Project has also been announced by the Prime Minister as part of the ongoing medium- and long-term solutions to the flooding issues in the affected area.
