KOTA KINABALU: The Election Commission (EC) has announced that the by-elections for the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat and the Lamag state seat in Sabah will take place on January 24 next year.
During a press conference held at the commission’s headquarters in the national capital, EC chairman Ramlan Harun said that nominations will occur on January 10, with early voting set for January 20.
These by-elections are necessitated by the passing of Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin on December 5, shortly after he was elected to a second term as the Lamag assemblyman.
At the age of 66, he secured his state seat with a narrow majority of only 153 votes in the recent Sabah state election.
The former deputy chief minister of Sabah had also served as the Kinabatangan MP for six consecutive terms. In the 2022 general election, he successfully retained his parliamentary seat with a substantial majority of 4,330 votes.
