Sabah Dive Club Makes Waves in Marine Conservation with Expanding Community and Strategic Partnerships

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Dive Squad Club has grown into a thriving force for marine conservation and community diving across Sabah, said its president, Sim Fui, following his re-election at the club’s Annual General Meeting held yesterday.

“Our club, also known as Deus Diving Club (DDC), has continued to thrive as a passionate community of divers bound by shared values: adventure, marine stewardship, and respect for the underwater world,” he said.

As of April 2025, the club boasts 111 members and has successfully organised over 30 diving and conservation activities since its establishment in 2022.

These include underwater cleanups, coral planting initiatives, and sustainable diving awareness campaigns across Sabah’s coastal areas.

One standout initiative took place on 28 July 2024, when 28 DDC divers participated in a marine cleanup at Mari-Mari Sepanggar Island, successfully removing over 100kg of marine debris. The effort was partially supported by a RM6,000 grant raised during the Lions Club Fundraising Bazaar.

DDC has also joined forces with the Royal Malaysian Navy, Sabah Parks, and over 130 divers in the Borneo Ultra Ocean Cleanup, showcasing the club’s dedication to collective marine protection efforts.

“The club continues to cultivate impactful collaborations with a host of partners, including Reef Check Malaysia, Marine Research Foundation (MRF), Malaysia Mermaid Club, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), local dive operators, and marine authorities,” Sim said.

“These partnerships enable us to scale our efforts and extend our impact across Sabah and beyond.”

Beyond fieldwork, DDC has also become an advocate for marine conservation through active engagement in both traditional media and digital platforms, defending Sabah’s marine biodiversity and promoting ethical, responsible diving practices.

With strong momentum and a growing network of allies, DDC is poised to make even greater strides in ocean conservation while inspiring the next generation of responsible divers.
