KINABATANGAN – The Sawit Kinabalu Conservation and Biodiversity Unit (CBU) is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the Second Scientific Expedition at the Sungai Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA), a region of significant ecological value.
Under the leadership of Mr. Charis Saliun, Manager, and Pn Rashidah Maqbool, Executive, CBU is committed to the sustainable management of biodiversity and conservation areas within the Sawit Kinabalu Group’s operations across Sabah, emphasizing ecotourism, community involvement, and scientific inquiry.
This expedition, carried out in partnership with the Forest Research Centre (FRC) of the Sabah Forestry Department (SFD), represents a vital advancement in our ongoing dedication to biodiversity conservation and the understanding of the ecological processes within this essential habitat.
Taking place from September 24 to 28, 2024, the expedition assembled 49 researchers and staff from both FRC and CBU, guided by Dr. Reuben Nilus, Mr. John Sugau, and Mr. Julsun Sikui. The primary objective was to thoroughly document the ecological integrity of the area through eight field studies focusing on land cover, soil physicochemical properties, forest dynamics, and the diversity of plants, large mammals, birds, fish, and insects.
Additionally, the team conducted a social science study within the neighboring communities to assess the impact of SPnCA on their livelihoods, ensuring that conservation initiatives are both sustainable and inclusive. These interdisciplinary studies aim to evaluate measurable conservation value indicators to enhance the management plan for the Sungai Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA CAMP).
Dr. Reuben Nilus highlighted the significance of collaborative scientific endeavors, stating, “The expedition is crucial in equipping us with the necessary information to better protect SPnCA.
SPnCA exemplifies how conservation and agriculture can coexist, ensuring that “we preserve not only trees but also the broader ecosystem.”
