Incentive for winning a gold medal at the SUKMA increased to RM10,000 – Hajiji

KUCHING: The Sabah Government has raised the incentive for gold medal winners of the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Sarawak from RM5,000 to RM10,000.

Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor, announced that each athlete from Sabah who secures a gold medal at this year’s SUKMA will receive an incentive of RM10,000, an increase from the previous amount of RM5,000.

He said that for silver and bronze medal winners, the state government will await recommendations from the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the State after the conclusion of SUKMA.

He expressed hope that the Sabah contingent would achieve its target of 40 gold medals at the 21st SUKMA in Sarawak.

“I encourage Sabah athletes to compete with a high sporting spirit and maintain self-discipline for the honour of the state of Sabah,” he said following a meeting with the Sabah Wushu Squad, which has successfully contributed three gold medals and one silver at SUKMA Sarawak XXI at the Pullman Hotel here today.

Also present were the Minister of Youth and Sports of Sabah, Datuk Ellron Angin, and his Assistant Minister, Datuk Fairuz Renddan; the Secretary of the Sabah State Government, Datuk Seri Panglima Sr. Haji Safar Untong; and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Sabah, Datuk Mansur Asun, who also serves as the Chief De Mission for Sabah.

Hajiji congratulated the Wushu squad for achieving the first gold and silver medals for Sabah.

The three gold medals won by the Wushu Squad were by Amirah Sofea Azlan in the women’s sanda event (45-48 kg), Dione Babyline Fely in the women’s sanda category (48-52 kg), and Fyenlly Himon in the men’s sanda (48-52 kg). The silver medal was secured by Ericson Bong Cheng Loong in the men’s toulu gunshu event.
