Elopura Marathon Sandakan to be held on 17 Nov this year

SANDAKAN: The second edition of the Sandakan Elopura International Marathon will be held on 17 November this year and is set to attract a diverse field of runners taking part, with the organiser expecting over 1000 participants coming from various regions to converge in Sandakan.

This eagerly anticipated annual sporting event is a collaborative effort between the Sandakan Orthopaedic Association and the Kinabalu Running Club, with support from the Sandakan Municipal Council and the Sandakan Tourism Association.

The Elopura Marathon will feature three categories: the challenging 42-kilometre route, the half marathon at 21 kilometres, and the 10-kilometre race. All 3 categories will commence on early Sunday morning at 2 am, 4 am, and 6 am, respectively, at the Sibuga Sport Complex.

The runners will traverse prominent thoroughfares in Sandakan, including Jalan Lintas Sibuga, Jalan Batu Sapi, Jalan Cecily, Leila Road, Jalan Buli Sim Sim, Jalan Lintas Utara, Jalan Airport, and Jalan Sibuga.

In addition, this year’s Elopura Marathon is more than just a race; it’s an opportunity to support the ROSE Foundation, a vital organisation dedicated to the prevention and early detection of cervical cancer in Malaysia.

By participating in this marathon, participants will be contributing to a cause that empowers women through health education and cervical screening.

The organising chairman, Dr. Timothy Cheng, disclosed that the Sandakan Elopura International Marathon holds the distinction of being part of the esteemed Borneo Marathon Series, sharing this accolade with the Kota Kinabalu’s Borneo International Marathon. Participants successfully completing both events within the same year will receive the exclusive Sabah Marathon Series 2024 t-shirt and medal.

This added incentive not only rewards their perseverance but also celebrates their continued commitment to marathon running on the west and east coast of Sabah.

For those who do not want to miss this signature sporting program, they can still sign up before August 31, 2024. More details can be found at https://www.facebook.com/elopuramarathonsandakan.
