A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck south of Mindanao Island today

KOTA KINABALU: A 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the northeastern Celebes Sea near the south coast of Mindanao Island, Philippines, around 10:13 on July 11.

As per the Crisis24 News Portal, the epicentre was approximately 106 km (66 miles) west-southwest of Sangay.

The quake struck at a depth of about 620 km (385 miles), causing light shaking in the central and southern parts of Mindanao Island.

No reports of damage or casualties have been received so far. It might take some time for authorities to assess the situation, especially in remote areas.

Expect aftershocks in the days ahead.

There are no tsunami advisories in effect.

Authorities may temporarily close transportation infrastructure in the affected area for damage assessment.

Minor disruptions could occur during these closures, but services should resume quickly if no damage is found.

Utility outages are possible, especially near the epicentre of the earthquake.

Meanwhile, Reuters has reported that a 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit Mindanao, Philippines, on Thursday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 630 km (391.46 miles), as stated by GFZ.
