KUALA LUMPUR: United Progressive Kinabalu Organization (UPKO) secretary general, Datuk Nelson Angang, was sworn in as a Senator today.
He took his oath in the presence of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Datuk Nur Jazlan Tan Sri Mohamed.
Nelson, who also holds the position of Beaufort UPKO Division Chief, has a background as a former magistrate and is currently a practicing lawyer with his own law firm.
Previously, he held the position of Chairman of Saham Amanah Sabah and is actively engaged in sports as the Deputy President of the Sabah Rugby Union.
The Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, who is also the President of UPKO, was also in attendance at the swearing-in ceremony.
Ewon expressed his appreciation to the King, Sultan Ibrahim, for approving the appointment of the UPKO Senator and thanked the Prime Minister, Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim, for endorsing the appointment.
“I anticipate that UPKO’s voice will resonate more strongly in Parliament moving forward, and that the provision of services to the people, particularly in Sabah, can be further enhanced through Datuk Nelson’s appointment as a Senator. I am dedicated to ensuring that the party’s advocacy remains pertinent at all times,” he stated.
Following the swearing-in ceremony, Nelson conveyed his gratitude to Datuk Ewon for putting forward his name as a Senator.
“I extend my thanks to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and UPKO President Datuk Ewon for their support and nomination of me as a Member of the Senate.
“I will fulfill this significant responsibility to the best of my abilities, not only addressing the various concerns raised by the people of Sabah but also national issues that need to be raised in the Senate,” he remarked.
