KOTA KINABALU: Catholic priests and nuns ought not to be the target of sexual jokes or ridicule by the country’s main political assembly, stated Tuaran MP, Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau.
He made this remark following a speech by an UMNO representative at the UMNO General Assembly 2026, which referenced a story involving a priest and a nun, including a mention of Psalm 129, as part of the address.
Reports on the speech confirmed that the story was used to illustrate the importance of staying focused and understanding the goals to be achieved.
Madius emphasized that whether intended as a joke or a satire, the matter remains inappropriate as it offends the Christian community nationwide.
“The Holy Scriptures, Catholic priests, and nuns should not be used as subjects for sexual jokes or ridiculed from the platform of a major political party assembly,” Madius asserted.
He stated that the speaker should acknowledge the mistake, retract the false reference to Psalm 129, and publicly apologize to the Catholic community and the entire Christian society.
“The speaker should rightly recognize the error in judgment, retract the false reference to Psalm 129, and offer an unconditional public apology to the Catholic community and all Christians,” he explained.
