SDTA organises a junior coaching clinic and a newcomer tournament

SANDAKAN: The Sandakan District Tennis Association (SDTA) recently organised the Sandakan Junior Coaching Clinic and Sandakan Newcomers Tournament at the SDTA courts in Mile 2 ½ Jalan Utara.

The two events were officiated by Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong, who was represented by her political secretary, Teo Chee Kim.

It was also attended by Sabah Tennis Association president Johnson Koh, SDTA president Silvester Lawai, Sandakan Industrial Training Institute Tennis Club vice president Jack Joseph, and representatives from the Sandakan Education Office and Sandakan Youth and Sport Office.

Vivian, in her speech read by Teo, commended SDTA for actively organising competitions and junior tennis development programmes in Sandakan.

She hoped such programmes could be carried out consistently for the advancement of tennis in the Sandakan district.

Meanwhile, the “Sandakan Newcomers 2024” tennis competition saw Farish Athmar Jamaludin defeat Bradley Oscar Johannes in the final to win the Men’s Open title.

Farish partnered with Bradley to beat Mohd Faziezan Azief Rohjan and Wafi Adwa Baharudin for the men’s double crown.

The Women’s Singles was won by Norah Nilus when she defeated 10-year-old Sandra Allysa Silvester in the final. In the Women’s Double category, the daughter-and-mother pair of Sandra Allysa Silvester and Salistina Tandai clinched the title after winning all their matches in the 5-team league.

SDTA president Silvester Lawai congratulated the junior players who registered for the tennis coaching clinic and also the winners of the Sandakan Newcomers tournament.

He thanked the organising sub-committees for having successfully organised the two events and hoped to unearth more junior players through these programmes.
