LAHAD DATU: The government, through the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM), is urged to intensify border surveillance to prevent attempts of intrusion into the waters of this state.
Segama Assemblyman Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi said that the existing security personnel are already carrying out their responsibilities to the best of their abilities, but there are other aspects that need to be improved to prevent any unwanted incidents in the future.
Among them are issues such as the lack of assets and personnel monitoring the borders and waters of the country, especially on the eastern coast of Sabah.
He said the government needs to take immediate action to ensure that incidents of intrusion, such as the one that occurred in Kunak waters resulting in security personnel injuries on April 7, do not recur.
“Although such incidents are rare, they still show that our borders and national sovereignty can easily be violated by foreign criminals,” he said.
Mohamaddin said this to reporters at the Segama state constituency’s Open House, near here on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Mohamaddin praised the bravery of two Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) personnel who were injured by gunfire while conducting patrols under Op Khas Pagar Laut recently.
He said that all personnel involved in the shooting incident are national heroes who deserve recognition.
