KIULU: Six children from Kampung Talantang, Kiulu, have to walk four kilometers to school if there are no vehicles available to leave the village.
It is understood that the villagers themselves have informed that the village connecting road has not been paved and is muddy during the rainy season, making it difficult for vehicles with four-wheel drive to pass through.
According to Lasius Pangin, a resident of Kampung Talantang, aged 49, these six students, including his two children, have to walk to school if there are no vehicles or if the route is difficult to pass during the rainy season.
“Usually, the tires easily get stuck due to the slippery and muddy road, causing damage to the vehicles.
“So, my children will walk in groups before 6 am and it takes up to an hour and a half to reach Lokub Primary School (SK),” he said when met at Kampung Talantang recently.
He explained that the route has been open since 1993 but until now, it has not been upgraded to a paved road.
In this regard, Lasius hopes that the hilly road leading to their village can be upgraded soon to facilitate the residents, especially the students, using that route.
Meanwhile, another resident, Vester Douni, in his 40s, said that a request to upgrade the road has been submitted to the Public Works Department (PWD).
“I have requested a support letter so that our application can be considered, and I hope a visit to this road can be conducted so that immediate action can be taken.
“To date, the road has only been adorned with gravel, albeit not along the entire course.
“Therefore, every year, I will refer to the Public Works Department (JKR) two or three times so that this road can be fully paved,” he said.
