Ang Pow Penampang Festival to take place on February 16

PENAMPANG: The Ang Pow Penampang Festival 2024 is extending an invitation to the community of Penampang and its surrounding areas.

The festival will take place on February 16 at Buhavan Square in Donggongon, here.

Datuk Ewon Benedick, the Member of Parliament for Penampang and Minister of Entrepreneurship and Cooperative Development, said that this annual event is being held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

The Penampang Parliamentary Office and the Kapayan Assemblyman’s Office are organising the festival, and they welcome people from all walks of life to join in the festivities.

This announcement was made following the lion’s eye opening ceremony at Tapikong Fook Tet Kung Dongongon on Thursday.

Also present were Kapayan Assemblyman Jannie Lasimbang, Deputy President of the United Kinabalu Progressive Organisation (UPKO) Datuk Donald Mojuntin, Penampang PKR Branch Chief Joseph Alex Chang, and Donggongon Chinese Community Leader Hoe Kwok Hung.

Regarding the lion’s eye opening ceremony, Ewon explained that it is a traditional practice carried out before the Chinese New Year celebration.

He emphasised the importance of preserving and honouring the cultural uniqueness of Penampang, particularly the traditions upheld by the Chinese community.

In preparation for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration, five Chinese community associations and clubs in Penampang have received donations of lion heads from the Penampang Member of Parliament and Kapayan Assemblyman.

These lion heads will be utilized during the festivities.
