The host of the carnival, former director of the Sabah State Customs Department, Datuk Hamzah Sundang, said that due to the overwhelming response, the organisers plan to organise the carnival every year.

The stone magpie observation activity has its own group of fans, especially among tourists and local residents,” he said at the opening ceremony of the carnival here recently.

The carnival was inaugurated by former Sabah Chief Minister and Usukan Assemblyman, Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.

The first-ever stone magpie carnival saw 237 participants and approximately 300 stone magpies competing.

The winner of the stone magpie competition received a cash prize of RM2,000 and a trophy, while the runner-up took home RM1,000 in cash and the third-place winner received RM500.
