MADIUS REQUESTS ATTENTION FOR SABAH IN PALM OIL DOWNSTREAM INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT, REPLANTING ASSISTANCE

KUALA LUMPUR: Tuaran MP, Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau, has urged the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities to focus on developing the palm oil-based downstream industry in Sabah, including efforts to utilize biomass and crude palm oil (CPO) to create high-value products.

He stated that Sabah has significant potential to develop downstream processing industries that not only enhance commodity value but also create business opportunities and provide more jobs for the local population.

While debating the 2027 Budget at the Committee level for the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday, he requested the ministry to clarify steps to attract investments, acquire technology, and open markets for palm oil-based downstream products.

“We want these materials to be processed in Sabah into high-value products, creating businesses and jobs for our children,” he said.

Madius also suggested that the ministry collaborate with the Sabah Government, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), and POIC Lahad Datu to coordinate efforts in developing the industry.

He specifically highlighted the potential of processing cellulose from palm oil to produce fibers, fabrics, and textiles, as well as advanced materials like nanocellulose, which have potential applications in various industries.

He mentioned that the ministry, along with the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), should consider financing pilot projects and assist in connecting technology owners with investors and industry buyers to test production costs, product quality, and market acceptance before scaling up production.
